Visiting Roussillon in 2000, Jean-Luc Thunevin discovers wonderful terroirs and is seduced by the region. At the same time, he meets Jean Roger Calvet, a local winemaker. They decide to buy a few hectares of vineyards together and they found the Domaine Thunevin-Calvet, located in Maury on beautiful terroirs of black schists. Their first vintage was produced in 2001.
Tasting Notes
A true blockbuster is the tiny production (there’s just 100 cases made) 2014 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Maries, and it’s easily up with the top two to three wines of the vintage. Made from a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah that will see 18 months in a mix of concrete and foudre, it offers fabulous purity in its crème de cassis, white pepper, black raspberry and licorice-driving bouquet. This flows to an inky colored 2014 that has full-bodied richness, building, notable tannic grip and a lively, balanced, weightless texture. Like the 2013, it shows the cooler nature of the vintage and shines for its purity, freshness and balance, all while not losing a beat with regards to texture or length. It will have 10-15 years of longevity.
